“Keep Your Windows Shut”—US States Warned of Toxic Air From Canada

United States: Wildfires in Canada are causing a lot of smoke, which has once again drifted to the United States.

Newsweek reports that millions of people living in Texas, Minnesota, and Michigan have been reminded to avoid being outside too much and to keep their windows shut because of ozone and pollutant problems.

By the weekend, western Pa. experienced some haze, as reported by TribLive.

More about the news

According to Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection, “While an air quality action day is not expected, some hazy skies and reduced visibility could be noticeable, especially in the southwestern part of the Commonwealth,” pennlive.com reported.

“These wildfires are part of a growing emergency across Canada, and the smoke is expected to drift into parts of the US, including Pennsylvania. Stay aware, especially if you have respiratory concerns,” the department added.

As per the National Weather Service in State College, which posted on X that the smoke “could allow for hazy skies in southern PA.”

“Minimal impacts are expected near the surface, but you may smell smoke this afternoon,” the post noted.

Reports indicate the smoke should reach central Pa. in the early part of this week.

Furthermore, as per Nicholas Beaty, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in State College, “A lot of it is aloft and not drifting down near the surface.”

“That is one good factor,” Beaty added.

Beaty explained to the outlet that the smoke should be kept high enough by the airflow that it would not affect the ground-level air quality. He predicted it could cause the sky to seem milky and give way to impressive sunrises.
